The last GVL Cartoons

I've finally graduated from Grand Valley State University, and thus completed my last cartoon for the Grand Valley Lanthorn.

Originally I was going to end with something more sentimental about all the little things I'll miss about Grand Valley, but then decided to just have fun with it and draw some random characters around the clock tower.

In case anyone's interested...From left to right: Rob Halford of Judas Priest, the recurring crazy drunk college kid from the comics, me, Donkey Kong, my dog, Andy, Captain Picard, The guy on the cover of Scorpions' "Blackout" album, Morty the old guy as featured in the comics, Louie the Laker, the 10th reincarnation of The Doctor, and Dwayne the go-to dimwit from the comics.

Also, a bit a late, but because I neglected to post it earlier here was the Thanksgiving/Black Friday cartoon I did this year:

Wow, I've done 100 of these things

I've been doing comics for the Grand Valley Lanthorn since 2009. This Monday my 100th GVL cartoon will be published.

Here's a quick easy way to flip through the 100 comics in order:

Previous 9/6 and upcoming 9/17 GVL Comics

Above: 9/6/12 GVL Cartoon. Grand Valley always feels so packed and busy at the beginning on the school year, especially this event, Campus Life Night, where all the student organizations come together to recruit all the new freshmen to join. So here was my sardine representation of some of our many organizations.

Below: Upcoming 9/17/12 GVL Cartoon. This one goes out to all the teachers and professors out there. This is actually kind of a pet peeve of mine, too, and I've never even taught a class before.

Upcoming 8/30/12 GVL: First of the fall 2012 semester

This one goes out to all the Freshmen getting flustered about making it to their classes on time only to have this happen.  I know I was in that boat way long ago when I was a freshman, as well as not being able to find my classes in the first place.

I don't think anyone is gonna pick up on it but the last panel was inspired by the famous "McKayla not impressed" expression from the Olympics:

By the way, don't forget I'm still offering commissions. Check it out!

Dumm Comics "Ghost of a Chance" art and the 4th of July GVL

This is my third time doing guest artwork for Zoo Laffs on Dumm Comics. I had a lot of fun with this one. Once I got the idea to pay homage to Maniac Mansion I just went full-out on it.

You can check it out and the rest of the guest artwork in the gallery here: As well as check out the story arc it's based off of.

And here was the GVL comic I did for the Fourth of July. I forgot to post it when it was actually relevant. Whoops...

Upcoming 6/4/12 GVL Cartoon + Bonus doodles

ABOVE: Tomorrow's Lanthorn cartoon (6/4/12) which goes out to all the zombie nerds out there getting bad ideas from the news.
As I've noted before I'm a huge Cinemassacre fan. I doodled the Nerd in the center in my notebook during class and liked it enough to take it into Flash and finish it, then I drew some more Nerd faces for the fun of it. He'd be fun to animate if the opportunity ever arose.

BELOW: Some random Looney Tunes doodles in my sketchbook done really quickly with pen. Funny how I take breaks from animating by either doodling other stuff or watching cartoons.

Update and Last 9 GVL Comics from the Winter 2012 Semester

Grand Valley Lanthorn Comic from 1/30/12:
2/2/12: I've seen this in real life, guys going to the bottle return with TONS of cans and bottles. Only these guys in the comic are too stupid to get the concept right.

2/6/12: Super Bowl comic.

2/13/12: At this time Grand Valley memes became huge....but it quickly died down. Anyway, I thought it would be fun to draw Scumbag Steve and follow the format of a meme as a comic.

2/20/12: I kind of wish I drew the stuff in the background bigger. It's hard to see in a smaller picture, let alone printed in the newspaper.

3/19/12: The ironic schedule of a drunken college kid.
He's going to find out the hard way that St. Patty's day doesn't necessarily equate to cheaper beer.

3/26/12: Grand Valley's air conditioning was on some kind of system where it wasn't going to turn on until April. Hot, humid, classrooms + Senioritis is a brainmelting combination. I also got away with some subtle innuendo in this one, which I thought was fun.

4/9/12: My former roommate and Lanthorn collaborator as a kid eating play-doh in a satire of the "Pink Slime" controversy.
After I sent out this comic I wished I had made it "Play-Duh" instead of the more cliche "Clay-doh" parody.

This one isn't a Lanthorn comic but something I made for my friends who graduated this year:

This was a CD cover I made for an Audio 1 project I was part of. This was a radio show in which unlikely guests, Yoda, Gollum, and Tony Montana come together to talk about the Issues in America but become distracted and cause their own issues in the sound studio:

This was guest artwork I did for Chris Garrison's Zoo Laffs comic strip on
You can see it in the gallery page:
I've also done a guest comic for him which can be seen here:

Lastly, I submitted three Scott Pilgrim t-shirt designs for a contest on
In a few days they'll finally announce the winners. Looking forward to see how I did:

Upcoming Monday GVL Strip and the Previous Thursday and Monday

I thought it was appropriate that the Internet be depicted as a cat.
I drew this after reading that headphone-wearing pedestrian injuries  have tripled since 2004. I think it's also a safe assumption that the truck driver was texting.
This is barely an exaggeration.

Upcoming Thursday GVL and the previous 2 Cartoons

Above: for the upcoming 1/12/12 issue. My first cartoon for the winter semester.

This is the cartoon I submitted for the 12/8/11 issue in response to a controversial piece written by one of the columnists, Chris Slattery. Long story short, he did a satirical article from the point of view of bigoted Americans who boast Christmas and tell the other holidays to take a hike. Some people didn't understand he was being satirical and the Lanthorn was flooded with letters from offended readers. However, my editor chose not to publish this cartoon as he thought it might inflame people more.

And lastly this one was from the 12/5/11 issue. I like the idea of Santa trying to use modern technology to do his work instead of magic and Christmas spirit.
